Confidence in the Classroom

In the heart of Madrid, Spain lies an after school program called Mosaico Learning Center within the church. This school serves the local community with about 30 students who receive weekly support and education in English and mathematics. While many after-school academies exist in Madrid, what makes Mosaico different is that it is more accessible/affordable, creates connections with the families, and brings the love of Jesus to drive its focus.

The majority of schools in Madrid are bilingual in English and Spanish. In the English classroom at Mosaico, creativity and practicality are deeply encouraged. Students have the chance to receive help with their homework and exam preparations, while also getting to practice real-life speaking scenarios as well as learning through crafts and games. Many of the students came in with low grades and a lack of confidence. Even within the last few months, their growth is commendable. There has been an improvement in their scores, the way they carry themselves, and their social skills.

In the math classroom, the professor speaks of the students’ growing confidence. Mosaico gives the children a safe space to be able to ask questions and seek understanding. Because of the smaller class size, the students are able to ask questions they might otherwise be too afraid to ask in their normal classroom in school. Therefore, they are able to get individualized help and improve daily. They are able to practice and solve any doubts they may have.

Two students in particular stick out within Mosaico: Álvaro (primary) and Nerea (high school). Both students started the course very shy with low confidence. They were hesitant to participate, but their determination was still there. Their classes use a points system to encourage hard work and participation. Throughout the last year, both students have become competitive in wanting to improve. They both now participate the most and have had the most improvement in their grades. They are also quick to help other students and lead by example. Mosaico has empowered both of these students to have confidence in their abilities and has helped them reach the goals they have set for themselves.

Mosaico recognizes that learning is a process that comes with its challenges but is determined to give each child a proper chance to learn and succeed in their endeavors. It has teachers that care about the students and curriculum that supports them. The goal of Mosaico is to intentionally serve its community without expectation.
